Floods wreck havoc in the Coast region

12:11 Jun 12 2020 Coast region, Kenya

Description
The deadly floods have left more than 5,000 people homeless in Tana River County and submerged acres of crops leaving locals at the mercy of relief aid. Roads in the flood prone county were rendered inaccessible to motorists following the intensity of the floods. Coast Regional Commissioner and Cabinet Secretary of devolution toured flood-hit areas in Tana River County to assess the extent of destruction to properties and human displacement due to flooding.
Several parts of Lamu County have also been submerged for several days due to high tides that have caused overflow from the Indian Ocean. The situation has left approximately 300 houses and shops flooded. Transport and movements have been greatly affected as donkeys, carts and motorbikes paddle through the flooded streets. Residents with houses adjacent to the ocean have been forced to remain indoors several days.
