LAND CONFLICTS IN HURARA, TANA RIVER

Description

Hurara area has been experiencing inter-communal conflicts emanating from pastoralists streaming into the Tana through the southern corridor from Kitui and other counties. Other settlers(from big towns such as Mombasa and Nairobi) have acquired land in the area through agreements. Local land brokers have since started dishonoring such agreements leading to protracted conflicts in the area. Indigenous communities now fear that the increased settler communities in the area shall take over power and leadership from the locals in a similar manner as they are acquiring large tracts of land. This has led to communities issuing threats of forced mass evictions of settlers from the area.
